Voices of Community Women, Men & Youth

Raj's Story Raj was an enthusiastic young group member in Metiabruz, but he lacked confidence and was not taken seriously by many in his group because of his age. Last year Raj attended a State level Men & Boys Seminar and came away feeling motivated, inspired and ready to speak up and raise his voice against violence on women. He became an active change maker and helped organise an awareness programme in his local area by liaising with community leaders during the 16 days campaign. With the exposure and success of the awareness programme Raj’s confidence and involvement with Swayam increased. He is now recognised in his community, not only as Swayam group member but a youth leader in his own right. Recently Haji Sahib, a religious leader directly approached Raj for support regarding a women survivor of violence. Raj initial spoke to the survivor, informed her about Swayam and then referred her to Swayam’s casework team. When we were looking for an animator in Metiabruz, Raj seemed to be the logical choice and was appointed animator by Swayam. He is active and motivates other young men to join the group. According to Raj, “previously I used to think about the benefits of getting attached with Swayam and now I’m trying to get other boys to join the team. We’ll only be able to understand what’s wrong and what’s right when we learn things properly.”

Theatre encourages and promotes self-expression, co-operation and teamwork. We could see that much of what we were trying to achieve in the support groups could be addressed through the process of theatre itself.
