Theatre Group


The Swayam theatre group has been in existence since 1997 and continues to play a vital role in all our outreach programmes. The idea of using theatre as a potentially powerful medium for raising awareness about violence against women, grew spontaneously out of a support group exercise.

Music Group


The Swayam music group, Jhankaar, was conceptualised in 2006 and has been delivering public performances ever since as part of Swayam’s awareness programmes and campaigns. The music performances have the ability to encourage an emotional response in its listeners which can facilitate discussions of difficult issues that our women survivors.

Prayas


Prayas meaning endeavour, is a magazine written and edited by the women and reflects their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Writing for the magazine allows them to explore their feelings and is a stepping stone in their search for self and self-confidence.

Art for Social Change


As part of our empowerment process we help women connect their personal struggles with those of the women’s movement and mobilise them to organise and participate in campaigns/programmes covering violence against women.

      Women and children who experience violence and discrimination need a variety of support services, particularly in crisis situations. However more often than not, they do not know whom they can approach for help. There are numerous organizations in Kolkata that provide these services but information about them is not easily available and tends to be limited. The Women’s Resource Directories bridge this gap by bringing together information about the availability of these services in a handy format that women and children can keep with themselves at all times.

    • Violence Facts & Figures

      Global estimates published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicate that “about 1 in 3 (35%) of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.”

    • Building Violence Free Communities

      Creating social condemnation against violence on women is one the most effective ways of preventing it. Swayam has been working consistently to establish gender-just and violence-free communities in a few rural and urban areas, in collaboration with local community members, CBOs, NGOs and the government machinery. Swayam’s aim is to facilitate the creation of pro active groups of women and girls, men and boys and equip them to address and prevent violence against women in their communities, with the ultimate objective of creating communities where women are free from violence.
