Music Group
The Swayam music group, Jhankaar, was conceptualised in 2006 and has been delivering public performances ever since as part of Swayam’s awareness programmes and campaigns. The music performances have the ability to encourage an emotional response in its listeners which can facilitate discussions of difficult issues that our women survivors and the community may be reluctant to discuss under other circumstances.
Like Swayam’s other creative groups, the music group is capable of coordinating its own activities – older members take responsibility to orient new members to the rules and help them learn songs.
In 2007 the music group developed a compilation of songs covering violence against women and recorded this onto a cassette called Swapner Kathamala (‘tales of dreams’ in Bengali), then later transferred this to CD format. In 2017 the music group released a compilation CD which was composed and sung by the group covering issues such as domestic violence, dowry and child marriage.

Theatre encourages and promotes self-expression, co-operation and teamwork. We could see that much of what we were trying to achieve in the support groups could be addressed through the process of theatre itself.

Prayas
Prayas is a quarterly magazine that is written and edited by survivors themselves. It contains poetry and prose primarily in Bengali with occasional pieces in Hindi and English.
